Name: Mary Magdalene
Title and Author: 'Jesus Christ Super Star' by Andrew Lloyd Webber
Genre and Style: Rock Opera
Also right about now, I am currently rehearsing the song "I Don't Know How To Love Him" which is performed by Mary Magdalene herself towards Jesus Christ.
Mary Magdalene is presented in the opera as bearing an unrequited love for the title character. The song has been much recorded, with "I Don't Know How To Love Him" being one of the rare songs which have had two concurrent recordings reach the Top 40 of the Hot 100 chart Billboard magazines, specifically those by Helen Reddy and Yvonne Elliman since 1950's when multi-version chartings were common. (Got my information from Wikipedia)
What appeals to you about this character: Mary Magdalene was a former prostitute but now one of Jesus closest allies. She is the only female who walks along with Jesus, which I find inspirational as women can be among men as well. She is a character that was disliked by large group of people due to who she was before however Jesus took her in, and didn't care about her past and forgave her although what she use to do was a sin, Jesus looked passed that.
What appeals to me about this play: The play visits the story of Jesus Christ in the Bible, however it also questions his existence in the world, which allows us to have a wider thought process as the lyrics proofs this in the song Jesus Christ Superstar. Adding with the play having various of number which I find exciting as their is songs involved and choreographs.
How can I relate to the character: I can relate to Mary Magdalene as she is a very loyal lady, as she always stood by Jesus's side, even while Jesus was on the cross for over 6 hours she stood by him until he passed away. I have the same characteristics, I am trustworthy and I will be there for you till the very end. I am also always the girl who gets along with boys more then girls, I completely feel comfortable in being in boys presence as I feel we have the same mind set. I am a young lady who believes in coming a better person everyday and I wont be ashamed to say I've messed up, therefore I could be compared to Mary Magdalene as she begged besides Jesus Christ's legs; holding onto to it tightly, while asking for forgiveness as she is willing to wipe away her sins and become a 'New Women'.
Can I connect emotionally to the character Mary Magdalene?: Yes I can connect emotionally as both of us have lost a most important male role model in our life's. Hers is Jesus Christ and mine is my dear Uncle, the emotion she goes through while she realized Jesus is no longer alive, this left her shattered into being numb and not knowing how to react and go on with her life. That is exactly how I felt when my uncle passed away I felt as if I wouldn't know how to carry on with my life because I believed it would be pointless without him, so what's the point?
How would I interpret the song 'I don't know how to love him': The song I find it manageable to sing as I am into the genre (R&B) in which I can class the song, as it expresses the feelings of being in love and not knowing why or how I am in love with this mysterious man.
