Thursday 16th October 2014 - Acting Assessment: Evaluation

Evaluation

The task was to learn the script of the play 'The Séance' I had seven people including me in the play. I played the role of Mark which was a male role. The particular focus was to perform as if you was at someone's house who is a perfectionist (Ryan's House) in where we were getting ready to play the game Ouija. The skills that I required was to be able to act out as a boy, dress like a boy, walk like one as well. First of all while we were rehearsing in the drama room I  had difficulties with adapting to the character, which felt me quite frustrated as I couldn't do my job properly. We've been asked by Sean first to read the play and get the sense of the story and then from then it helped us find out who each character is. I personally thought the task was brilliant due to this being the first time me acting and having my own script, it was a real challenge for me. The ideas that we had was for me and Jarja (Ada) to be a funny type of character who takes nothing seriously. To help achieve this task, I wore baggy clothes to emphasis a hood type of male character, I changed the way I walked so the audience could tell what type of character I was portraying.

The problems that we faced was three of the people in our play didn't arrive early, so we didn't really have enough time to run through certain scenes, which got me and Deneille worried to be honest. What we found challenging is being focused while running through each scene since we knew the whole script, we took advantage of the time we were giving. The working conditions was the main thing we were struggling with as the drama studio is small and we had various of other groups rehearsing it made it hard for us to concentrate on us, so that's we would mostly as Sean to enable us to rehearse in the theatre. The things we tried to improve is get people of their phones as this caused people to be less focused and unaware when their lines were. We tried an idea of rehearsing during lunch times we allowed everyone to have at least fifteen minuets to get their lunch. However this didn't work out, as we weren't able to follow the instructions and come back when told. So we rejected that idea.

Giving everyone their own responsibilities to learn their lines and be the best they can, this changed everybody's attitude as everyone became a lot more mature and willing to put all their effort to make it work. This showed massively in our performances each day as we put are all, and didn't let no distractions get in between us. While other students were making noise and getting in our scenes, we all brushed them off and continued working on our piece. This made me extremely proud because it seemed like we transformed into young adults in a Drama school for example.

Our final performance was statically effective as the feedback we got given from our audience were all positive and motivational, everything we worked careful on and wanted to be expressed got realized by the audience as they picked out, Ada's character of being geeky and blunt. Deneille being the character who only cared about keeping his house clean at all times adding on with me being a drug addict and love thinking about 'what if's' in every situation. Key moments that i could select out of my performance was the walk off stage, i lot of people enjoyed that, as they laughed of the way i walked off as a (bad boy). Although the boys found it cringe-worthy they loved it!

Three Positives:
Good characterization.
Great performing costume.
Stayed in character throughout.

Three Negatives:
Forgot my first lines.
Repeated a line twice.
Better projection of voice.

Improving on my weakness would be beneficial in the near future as i would be confident on the flow of the play and projection on the voice will help the audience to be able to hear 100% everything will be saying.
